MNBC's Ministry of Environment is thrilled to share Stories from the Soil - a knowledge-sharing initiative designed to document, preserve, and distribute gardening knowledge, lived experience, and traditional food practices with Métis people across British Columbia. Across generations, people have harvested, cooked, preserved, and shared food in ways that reflect who they are and where they come from. Through growing and preparing food, knowledge is passed down, relationships are strengthened, and connections to land and community start to grow. Stories from the Soil brings together Métis voices that explore these connections through personal stories of gardening, traditional foods, family recipes, harvesting experiences, sharing with community, and finding belonging through food. Whether grown in a backyard, on a balcony, in a community plot- growing food invites us to slow down, observe and connect with community. Throughout this collection, you will find moments of joy, resilience, patience, and discovery. Some stories describe traditions passed down over generations, while others share new practices that help people reconnect with food and create food security in ways that are meaningful to them.
